Mother-tongue Teaching in Hong Kong

Mother-tongue teaching is the act of teaching in the native language of the pupils in a certain area of country, as opposed to teaching in a foreign language. The subject is specially important in those regions where there is a foreign language that is highly prevalent for historical, political or economical reasons. This article focuses on the region Hong Kong.
==History==
Cantonese is the main language spoken in Hong Kong. English was taught in Hong Kong's schools before 1997 because Hong Kong was a colony of the United Kingdom. The new government revived teaching in Cantonese during the early 1980s, since the governance of the colony was moved from the United Kingdom to the People's Republic of China under the one country, two systems method. By the end of 1994, however, only 20% of secondary schools adopted Cantonese as the language medium of teaching. From the 1998-1999 school year, with direction from the government, 75% of schools began to use Cantonese in their classes.〔(【引用サイトリンク】Report: The Success and Failure in Mother-Tongue Teaching )">url=http://www.inmediahk.net/node/321730# )〕
